About Country Natural Beef
Country Natural Beef is a rancher-owned cooperative founded in 1986 and now the largest ranching co-op in the western United States. With nearly 100 family ranches across nine states, the organization is built on a shared philosophy: leave the land better than you found it. The co-op is dedicated to producing premium beef raised without antibiotics or added hormones, while advancing regenerative ranching practices that support soil health, animal welfare, and rural communities.
Position Overview
The FP&A Manager will build and lead CNB’s financial planning and analysis (FP&A) function. This role owns the delivery of timely, accurate, and actionable reporting, forecasting, and analysis. The FP&A Manager turns financial and operational data into clear insights that help the co-op make better decisions, balancing profits and long-term sustainability for rancher premiums and the meat company. The FP&A Manager is a business partner to all functions of the business, including production, sales, and marketing.
The ideal candidate brings fresh meat industry experience (live cattle production, feedyard, harvest plant operations, and/or retail), strong financial modeling skills, and independent critical thinking and reasoning skills. The person in this role must be able to flex between strategic long-term thinking and detailed work on a daily basis.
Key Responsibilities
Leading and building the FP&A function
- Manage and develop the FP&A function.
- Design and document FP&A processes, calendars, and models so the function runs consistently and doesn’t depend on any one person.
- Lead the use of BI and AI tools within FP&A to automate recurring work and speed up analysis.
- Partner with the Controller and accounting team to keep data clean and close results aligned with reporting.
Management reporting
- Own the monthly management reporting package: results versus budget and forecast, key metrics, and concise written commentary on the drivers.
- Assist in preparing financial materials for Board and Finance Committee meetings.
- Maintain and evolve a consistent set of financial and operational KPIs for management.
- Build, automate, and continuously improve recurring reports and dashboards for management and co-op members (ranchers). Move reporting from manual spreadsheets toward reliable, repeatable tools.
Budgeting, forecasting, and planning
- Own execution of the annual budget process. Build and maintain the budget model, coordinate input from department leaders, and prepare budget materials for CFO review and Board approval.
- Lead the monthly reforecast. Update the full-year outlook for actual results, cattle and beef markets, and supply plans, and clearly explain what changed and why.
- Build and maintain a rolling cash flow forecast with the Controller. Anticipate seasonal working capital swings, borrowing needs, and timing of member and vendor payments.
- Develop scenario and sensitivity models (e.g., cattle prices, cutout values, volumes, pricing) for leadership to understand the risks and trade-offs before decisions are made.
Member returns and production analysis
- Continuously analyze member premiums and incentives to optimize member returns and meat company profits. Recommend changes so CNB pays premiums for the things that drive better results.
- Model the balance between meat company profitability and total returns to ranchers, and show leadership the trade-offs.
- Analyze the costs and drivers for cattle that don’t meet CNB program requirements, and their impact on member and company returns.
- Analyze the impact of days on feed and total feeding costs compared to overall returns.
- Analyze red meat yields and tie them to feeding performance.
Commercial and pricing support
- Partner with the sales team on pricing, margin, customer, and product profitability analysis.
- Analyze sales, pricing, harvest, finished goods inventory, and live cattle supply data to identify trends, risks, and opportunities.
- Provide financial analysis for new customer programs, contracts, and other business decisions.
Analytics and decision support
- Translate complex and ambiguous questions into clear, structured analysis and recommendations.
- Respond to ad hoc analysis requests from the CFO, CEO, and leadership team.
- Maintain a high standard of accuracy and accountability in all financial analysis.
Qualifications
If not all requirements are met, strong consideration will be given to applicants who demonstrate the qualitative/attitudinal requirements in this job description and have a strong appetite for learning and growth.
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Ag Business, Finance, Accounting, or Economics. MBA optional but preferred.
- 3+ years of progressive experience in FP&A, corporate finance, or financial analysis.
- Professional experience in at least one segment of the fresh meat industry (live cattle production, feedyard, harvest plant operations, and/or retail), preferably in the cattle and beef industry.
- Advanced Excel modeling skills, including driver-based budget and forecast models and scenario analysis. Builds models that are organized, documented, and easy for others to use.
- Experience with BI and data tools (e.g., Power BI or similar) and with pulling and working with data from an ERP system.
- Uses AI tools (e.g., Claude) to automate recurring work, speed up analysis, and improve reporting, or has a strong desire to learn.
- Excellent written and verbal communication. Can turn numbers into a clear, concise story for non-finance audiences, including ranchers. Speaks candidly and directly. Extremely responsive, especially on high-priority items. Accepts feedback humbly.
- High level of energy and curiosity. Self-starter, constantly seeks to dig deeper into questions, self-educates, and identifies problems to work on before being asked.
- Scrappy and adaptable. Able to work independently and across a small remote team. Able to manage and deliver on multiple, competing priorities.
- Accountable for results and efforts. Takes ownership for the timeliness, accuracy, and impact of deliverables both within and out of their control. Effective at structuring time and work in a remote environment.
Working Conditions
- This role is 100% remote. CNB’s employees are located across 11 states and multiple time zones.
- CNB employees are expected to have an appropriate home office working environment where they can take video calls and work with minimal distractions.
- Nearly 100% of this job takes place at a computer. Occasional travel is required for team meetings (expected 2-4 times per year).
